Contemporary wooden fireplace surrounds broadly fall into two categories - updated versions of traditional designs which have a timeless appearance, and designs directly inspired by modern aesthetic movements such as minimalism. Although some modern fireplaces are made from solid wood, wood veneered finishes are more common. Wood veneer finishes give a more consistent grain pattern and colour which is better suited to modern designs than the unique knot formations of solid timber. Wood veneer fireplace surrounds can be used with gas or electric fires, but are not suitable for use with solid fuel fires.
